I tend to delete these, mainly because I know I’ll lose them if I don’t, so why bother? With AppShelf, on the other hand, you can drag those items into the attachments area to keep them attached to the correct application’s serial number information. Often, when purchasing shareware, you receive a user manual or other information you’d like to save. This is what I think makes AppShelf really nice. See the Attachments button/icon in the toolbar (on the far right)? Go ahead and click it, and a new entry area slides into view. It doesn’t have to be “pretty” to be useful.īut we’re not done, because AppShelf has another option I think is great. Slightly less nice-looking, sure, but this isn’t an application I’m going to be using every day, like a word processor or web browser. If that’s all that AppShelf did, I’d recommend something like Pastor, which is free. If you’re finished, just click to add another item and repeat the process. When you’re finished, hit to save the information, and you’ll be returned to the main window. You’ll particularly want to input the serial number and website, should you lose either of that information. Go ahead and fill in the missing information. AppShelf grabs as much information from the application bundle as it can (name, version number), so the next screen, the slightly transparent black window, may already be partially filled in for you. Navigate to your Applications folder and find an application you’ve purchased and now want to catalog.
SAFE SERIAL NUMBER SITES MAC OSX
Click it and you get the standard Mac OSX file picker. Start it up and you’ll notice a large Add button in the toolbar.

I’ve written about other serial number “vaults” before (Pastor having always been my favorite), but AppShelf has a few extra features that really put it over the top for me.įirst, AppShelf is quite easy to use.
SAFE SERIAL NUMBER SITES MANUALS
Sure, most shareware authors have some mechanism for retrieving lost serial numbers, but I like to be self-sufficient.ĪppShelf is a program that allows me to keep track of all that information – serial numbers, websites, cost, download links, even user manuals – all in one convenient place. So in my case, keeping track of all this information is very important. Of course, since I only purchased the license and downloaded the software, I typically don’t get any users manuals or a physical CD, so there’s very little between having the application installed on my computer and a crash that wipes out everything. Other times, however, I come to the conclusion that the shareware application is the best solution and purchase it. Sometimes I find another option for free, and use that instead. Very often I realize that although the program might be good, it’s not exactly what I’m looking for.
